Your comment on greeting the group after the toss, "they are going to think I'm a idiot and an incompetent pilot" is a natural reaction that never crossed my mind, although totally understandable.

The moment all hell breaks loose, you had to stay cool, evaluate the problem, consider your options, make that huge decision on deployment, and then DO IT, all in a matter of seconds. The pilots that witnessed your situation, patted your back & toasted you were probably thinking, "this guy just proved himself as a competent pilot with a cool head".
