Went out to Marshall to check out the Southern CA Open PG contest. When I arrived on launch (around 1pm) everyone was sitting around waiting for a distant fire to be controlled. After the all-clear, it was fantastic watching about 40 wings take to the air in rapid-fire succession and thermal over launch like a multi-hued cluster of butterflies. I've never seen anything like it, other than in pictures.

Since the day's task was centered around the launch area, I decided to wait until the air cleared before launching. By that time (5:30) the conditions were smooth and light, perfect glass-off. I boated around for a while in the buoyant air before landing to watch the aerobatics display (and a few other oddities like a paragliding trapeze artist and one pg launching mid-air from another).

Live music, lots of familiar faces, beer and bbq and about 200 people in the LZ made for a fun atmosphere. Still, after reading Chris' report, I wish I'd been at Pine instead!
