Looked like today was going to remain overcast but it cleared relatively early. Bruce called around 10:45 and was going to go up to Pine and Chief to put in some fancy new windsocks. Didn't expect to do any flying but took our wings anyway. We arrived at Pine around 12:45ish and it was howling as usual. Re-did the windsocks and made a run for Chief. Made the call to hit Nordhoff first since it was probably the least likely to be flyable and if it was at least launchable would be the most likely to get me to the HS. Cycles were coming up nicely and after we replaced the windsock on the tower (the old one had been swiped...AGAIN) I launched (3:00?). Got picked up and looked like I was going to have a nice ride....Boy was the joke ever on me. Sledride out to the front ridge where the thermals were small, weak, and short. Landing in the valley was better than landing in the brush so I headed out after attempting a few weak circles. Hit a stiff headwind just past the foothills and had to put down in the dry reservoir. Packed up and hiked home by 4:45.
