Rescued hang glider OK

By staff reports

A Ventura hang glider landed in a mountainous area near Lake Casitas Sunday afternoon and had to be rescued by helicopter, officials said. Tony Deleo, 50, was not injured when his hang glider went down at 2 p.m. in the area of White Ledge Peak, which is north of Lake Casitas and west of Ojai, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Aviation Unit. The area is covered with dense, thick brush, has few trails, and steep terrain, so Deleo was not able to walk to safety.

Using a hand-held citizens band radio, Deleo contacted a friend, who then informed the sheriff's dispatch center about Deleo's location, officials said. A sheriff's helicopter flew out and found Deleo.

Deputies told Deleo to go to a large rock so they could rescue him because the helicopter could not descend into the steep, brush-covered area where he was located. Deputies then helped Deleo get into the hovering helicopter, officials said.
