Len Szafaryn and I climbed a technical route on a well known peak in the Owens Valley with the hopes of launching it. Saturday had been perfect, blue skies, high pressure, and no wind. But when we arrived at the summit at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, the wind above 14000 feet was 20 mph NNW. The top was a boulder field with nowhere to run. Both the flight plan and the steepest cliffs were to the SE. The only thing that flew were the explicatives.
Foiled, we hiked down the tourist trail with the wind on our backs the whole way down.
