4/14/01 – La Salinas, Mexico

After getting blown out at Horse Canyon, we decided to drive down to La Salinas. We camped at the LZ. We had to fight off the mosquitoes in the morning. But, it didn’t take away from our excitement over the possibility of flying, as we got skunked the day before.

We had to wait until around 11:00 before the winds started to turn around from the north. But, as soon as we got up to launch it was blowing straight up the ridge at about 12-15. We launched fairly easily and were immediately drawn up by the strong lift band.

It was definitely not going to be a stroll in the park like Torrey Pines. I took a wrap on my breaks and flew more assertively. There were several gusts and various punchy thermals popping off. The thermals were small and spiky with a lot of down flown immediately following. It was a challenging 1- ˝ hour flight, but was definitely worth the drive.

We ended up meeting other pilots from Massachusettes and Switzerland. Neither one was willing to stick it out up there. They launched and landed shortly after.

It was fun to visit with them at the LZ and share a few stories over a Corona.

Bienvenido Mexico!

Kristi
